The Jansen Campus: Built visions

Jansen AG has undergone continuous growth since its foundation in 1923. Hall after hall has been erected on the outskirts of the munici-pality of Oberriet in upper Rheintal in the canton of St. Gallen, the last being Hall M. This building attracted a great deal of public attention as the first industrial building in East Switzerland that was built to the Minergie standard. With the Jansen Campus the company has taken yet another step forward. The new building was designed by the Swiss architect Davide Macullo from Lugano, and its unique form is a statement in itself.

The architect was commissioned with reflecting and continuing the architectural heritage of this industrial settlement that has evolved over the years. The design brief was, however, also to provide a creative environment for the workforce. In close collaboration with the client, Macullo created a building defined by its strict geometry and that therefore embodies the demands of this company and its long tradition with regard to quality, precision and sustainability. The new building’s angular exterior
resembles a crystal of quartz standing out against the impressive backdrop of the nearby Alps. The expanded metal-clad facade and a roof covered by Rheinzink enhance this impression. In contrast, the huge, square, angled window openings –steel and glass constructions extending over several floors– leave no doubt as to the purpose of the Jansen Campus: an open space for communication and meetings, for constructive en-counters.

Building description
The building can be described as a cube cut vertically across both diagonal planes, with these separate elements offset at a slight distance to one another with a  varying height. The four sections of the building are connected by glazed axes that lend the large volume of the construction a certain lightness. The lowest building section with its deep, extended roof area connects the building to the residential buildings on the other side of the road. The entrance area is opposite the oldest Jansen production hall. Both buildings are connected by an abundant, landscaped garden. The new building features three main floors and a mezzanine in which the functions are horizontally structured: the public buildings –the entrance, reception area and access to the newly designed staff restaurant– are located on the ground floor.

Facilities for customer and staff training are on the first floor. The other areas are used as offices or conference rooms. The bearing structure made of reinforced concrete follows the triangular volume of the basic footprint so that the internal area can be used flexibly and also partly as an open-plan office. The vertical connections are two structural elements: a main connection with stairs and lift and a stairwell as an emergency escape route. High load-resistant, slim-line steel profile systems A large number of the products that  Jansen produces every day and supplies around the world were used in the new building. One of these was the new VISS SG steel profile system with which the large-format facade openings were constructed.

They are located at all places offering an appealing view of the nearby and distant surroundings. VISS SG is the Jansen system for facade structural glazing. With the filigree steel profiles and glazed areas of up to 2.5 x 5.0 metres, the transparency of the building envelope can be heightened considerably. Variable glass anchors enable the installation of double or triple glazing with an element thickness of up to 70 mm. The VISS SG offers facade constructors, architects and clients the benefit of maximum options with minimum additional components.

The components of the innovative TABS thermo-active component system climate control concept were also made at the company’s own facilities. TABS is the latest technology for cooling and heating commercial and industrial buildings. Concrete is an ideal material for the storage of cold and heat due to its mass. Jansen plastic pipes are laid in the concrete core of the floors and ceilings and used to control the temperature in the entire building core.

While the temperature in conventionally designed buildings slowly increases in hot weather periods as the heat accumulates and cannot be carried away, with TABS the concrete core of the building can be exposed to a flow of cold ground water to carry away the heat. In the winter, hot water is pumped through the pipes. The surfaces then have a constant temperature that immediately heats the cold air in the rooms. This results in pleasant, draughtfree ambient conditions all year round.
With the innovative TABS the Jansen Campus meets the demands of a contemporary energy concept in an exemplary manner.

Transparent fire protection concept
The emergency escape routes are protected with fire protection structures of steel and glass. Jansen only recently presented the automatic fire protection sliding doors made of Janisol 2 EI30 that are located at the interfaces of the fire protection sections. With a body width of only 25 or 50 mm for door elements or door frame profiles this is one of the most slimline fire protection sliding door systems on the market. The clever sensor technology of this sophisticated system concept ensures a high level of safety, and it is also extremely convenient due to its automatic actuation.

Structures of the Janisol 2 EI30 steel profile system with its high load resistance combine reliable function with a high design standard. The glazed fire protection doors
of more than 3 metres in height enable the realisation of the transparency, lightness and openness desired by the architect and client in the access areas to the stairwell, restaurant, offices and training rooms. The high performance of the Janisol 2 EI30 steel profile system was confirmed in various fire tests in combination with a number of different glass types on an international scale.

The list of other harmonious detail examples is long, and includes the furniture for the standard workstations purchased from a Swiss supplier that features Jansen steel tubes in the height adjuster. The other furniture was supplied by manufacturers from Milan who in turn use suppliers from the immediate environment of the company. The conscious use of products from the company’s own production facilities not only promotes the identification of employees with the company – it makes the Jansen Campus unique.
